Camping in the Car

If your vacation funds are limited and lodging at a motel is out of the question, why not consider car camping? Car camping is not turning your vehicle into a rolling motel, but rather packing up your camping gear and heading out to the campsite of your choice. Once you have arrived at your destination unpack the equipment, set up camp and enjoy!

There are many benefits to car camping. Some of those benefits include the nearness of handy transportation for scenic trips or errands and a close convenient storage site.

Packing

When packing your automobile to go car camping it is tempting to bring along many items that defeat the purpose of camping. Camping is an opportunity to relax, refocus and enjoy the outdoors. It is highly suggested that packed items include the basics of life such as food, clothing and camping gear.

While packing keep in mind the unpacking order of items needed upon arrival and pack accordingly. Also, try to remember your daily routine when at home and make sure you only bring those items that are a necessary part of that routine.

In addition, plan a menu. Pack only the quantity of the food products needed to prepare the menu item for everyone in your group.

Bringing along a computer, television, portable DVD player and other electronic equipment can be counterproductive. Give yourself a chance to really enjoy your surroundings and the people you're with. You will be back to the “real world” soon enough!

Car Check-up

Your car is an integral part of car camping. It is prudent to make sure that your vehicle is in good operating condition. Therefore, check the tire pressure, water, engine hoses and make sure that the spare tire is in good working order.

Arriving at the Campground

The earlier the better is a good rule of thumb in getting the best choice of campsites at the campgrounds. Depending on your preference you can be close to the bathrooms for convenience or further from the restrooms for seclusion. Getting the tent up before dark can also save you a lot of frustration. A practical hint in setting up your tent would be to practice before you leave home on your car camping trip. Finally, setting up your campsite further away from the trash disposal area is prudent to avoid the insects they attract.

Items Needed

Specific items needed for your car camping trip should include extra propane containers for cooking on your outdoor stove and for the lantern. Adding a touch of home would include comfortable lawn chairs and a tablecloth for the picnic table. Using starter logs is much easier if you plan on a campfire.

Few Practical Tips

Your car camping experience will be even more enjoyable when you follow a few practical tips. For obvious reasons take along extra toilet paper, don’t forget the sunscreen and insect repellant and pack a first aid kit. The best time to use the shower is when it has just been cleaned.

Cautions while car camping would include being careful not to drain your car battery. Also, if a fire has been built make sure the logs are drowned if left unattended. Adhere to the rules of the campground for your safety and those around you. Finally, make sure you lock your valuables in the vehicle to keep honest people honest.

Enjoy the Experience

Car camping is an opportunity to detach from the routine and connect with yourself, your family and the beauty of your surroundings. Smile a lot, walk a lot, enjoy a sunrise, enjoy a sunset. Finally, just enjoy.
